Master of Architecture

Students in the Master of Architecture program learn the history, theory, and technique of architectural design, developing the skills and experience necessary for professional practice and the critical thinking necessary to develop new ideas and drive invention and expand the discipline of architecture.

In the MArch programs, we teach through hands-on inquiry, experimentation, and exploration. Coursework combines project-based design studios organized around a timely intellectual focus, technical courses in building structures and systems, professional practice and architectural technology, and electives in architectural history and theory. We encourage MArch students to develop their practice by taking courses in other departments across SAIC and by applying to AIADO’s External Partnership courses. In their final year, students complete a rigorous comprehensive studio and pursue a self-directed design thesis under the supervision of faculty in the department.

  • In the United States, most state registration boards require a degree from an accredited professional degree program as a prerequisite for licensure. The National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB), which is the sole agency authorized to accredit US professional degree programs in architecture, recognizes three types of degrees: the Bachelor of Architecture, the Master of Architecture, and the Doctor of Architecture. A program may be granted a 8-year, 3-year, or 2-year term of accreditation, depending on the extent of its conformance with established educational standards. More information on SAIC's accreditation can be found here.

Doctor of Architecture and Master of Architecture degree programs may consist of a preprofessional undergraduate degree and a professional graduate degree that, when earned sequentially, constitute an accredited professional education. However, the preprofessional degree is not, by itself, recognized as an accredited degree.

In order to meet the education requirement set forth by the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards, an applicant for an NCARB Certificate must hold a professional degree in architecture from a program accredited by the NAAB; the degree must have been awarded not more than two years prior to initial accreditation. However, meeting the education requirement for the NCARB Certificate may not be equivalent to meeting the education requirement for registration in a specific jurisdiction. Please contact NCARB for more information.

Our Master of Architecture Degrees in the Department of Architecture, Interior Architecture, and Designed Objects have been accredited by the NAAB in 2011 after candidacy accreditation was granted in 2007. Our next accreditation visit is scheduled for 2023.

Our professional MArch degrees are STEM designated. Our MArch graduate students have the option of completing a Certificate in Historic Preservation concurrently while pursuing their Master of Architecture degree.

    • Master of Architecture, Option 2 (2-year program; total 60 credits; requirement: preprofessional degree)
    • Master of Architecture with an Emphasis in Interior Architecture, Option 2 (2-year program; total 60 credits; requirement: preprofessional degree)
    • Master of Architecture (3 year program; total 90 credits; requirement: nonprofessional degree)
    • Master of Architecture with an Emphasis in Interior Architecture (3 year program; total 90 credits; requirement: nonprofessional degree)

National Council of Architectural Registration Boards Certificate

To meet the education requirement set forth by the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB), an applicant for an NCARB Certificate must hold a professional degree in architecture from a program accredited by NAAB, and the degree must have been awarded not more than two years prior to initial accreditation.

However, meeting the education requirement for the NCARB Certificate may not be equivalent to meeting the education requirement for registration in a specific jurisdiction. Please contact NCARB for more information.

  • The department conducts interviews by invitation only. Applicants who pass the preliminary review will be invited to schedule an interview in mid-February. Notification will be sent by late January. For students at a distance or unable to travel, interviews may be conducted remotely.

Master of Architecture with a Track in Interior Architecture

Students in the MArch with a Track in Interior Architecture program gain all the expertise necessary for the practice of architecture, while developing the sensibilities specific to the growing field of Interior Architecture. Graduates earn a National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB) professional qualification, which recognizes the significance of architectural design where form, structure, and enclosure are considered in proximity to materials, objects, human needs, and spatial experiences.

Interior Architecture is a growing professional field where architects are having increasing impact. In the MArch programs, we teach through hands-on inquiry, experimentation and exploration, developing the skills and experience necessary for professional practice and the critical thinking necessary to develop new ideas and drive invention.

Coursework combines project-based design studios organized around a timely intellectual focus, technical courses in building structures, systems professional practice, and architectural technology, and electives in architectural history and theory.
