2026 Move-Out

Non-graduating students must move out by 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 17, 2026. Graduating students must move out of the residence halls by 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 19. It is our experience that the least crowded time is around 11:00 a.m. Elevators will operate normally.

Students may purchase boxes for $4 per box at the 162 North State Street, 4th floor office, and the Jones Hall, 3rd floor office, during normal business hours starting in April. Students may only use their ARTICard to purchase boxes; cash, credit cards, and checks will not be accepted. Buckingham residents will be able to purchase boxes from both 162 North State Street or Jones Hall. Students may also use CollegeBoxes to pack and store their items.

The City of Chicago is undertaking a major infrastructure project that will significantly impact move-out operations at the 162 State Street Residence Hall. The State/Lake Loop Elevated Station Reconstruction Project includes a full reconstruction of one of the city’s busiest transit stations and will require the complete closure of the State/Lake Loop Elevated Station for the duration of the project. As a result, residents should anticipate disruptions to traffic flow, limited access points, and delays in the immediate area during move-out.

Read more about the construction and service impacts and find more move-out information below.

  • To assist with move-out, the following times have been coordinated with the city of Chicago:

    • Thursday, May 14 & Friday, May 15: 2:00–8:00 p.m.
    • Saturday, May 16 & Sunday, May 17: 8:00 a.m.–8:00 p.m.

What to Expect with Traffic & Loading:

SAIC has partnered with the City of Chicago to ensure that the constructions taking place in front of the 162 building will be adjusted to allow a smooth move-out process. We’ll be managing traffic closely to keep things moving:

    • The Couch Place alley will be closed to regular access. Trucks, SUVs, vans, or U-Hauls will not be allowed in the alley* (see below for details).
    • Cars will be lined up against the building to ensure two lanes for flow of traffic while in Couch Place alley.
    • Security will be stationed to help guide vehicles. Please see the visual below for where staff can be located.
    Image
The map of streets around 162 N State Street.

    • There will be a 15-minute limit for loading vehicles.

    Important: Move-Out Indicator Required

    • Any vehicle assisting with move-out must have the move-out indicator displayed in order to be allowed into the loading line.
    • Vehicles without this indicator will not be permitted to enter the line.

To make the most of that time, we strongly recommend that students have their belongings packed and loaded onto a blue cart before their car arrives.

    *Bringing a Larger Vehicle?

If you’re using a SUV, van, truck, or U-Haul, you’ll need to park on State Street in front of the building.

    • State Street will be closed to regular access. Trucks, SUVs, vans, or U-Hauls will not be allowed in the alley.
    • You must show your parking certificate in order to enter the construction area. You will not be allowed into the construction area without your parking certificate.
    • There will be two lanes—one for traffic and one for 15-minute parking. There are only limited spaces available for parking; please expect a delay.
    • Security will be stationed to help guide vehicles. Please see the visual below for where staff can be located.

    • There will be a 15-minute limit for loading vehicles. If you require additional time, you will need to move your car and re-enter the line.

    A Quick But Important Reminder

Vehicles may not be left unattended. Someone who can drive should stay with the vehicle at all times in case it needs to be moved.

Vehicles left unattended or found not following these guidelines may unfortunately be ticketed or towed by the City of Chicago. To locate your towed vehicle, you can contact the City of Chicago Auto Pound Section at (312) 744-4444.

    Need Boxes?

We expect to have some moving boxes available for purchase at the 4th floor office of 162 (more details coming soon), but we recommend picking up supplies ahead of time from places like Home Depot or Menards if you can.

Thanks in advance for your cooperation. We know move-out can be a busy time, and we’re here to help make it as easy as possible. Please reach out if you have any questions.

    Helpful Move-Out Tips

    • Pack up your room prior to your vehicle arriving.
    • You may check out blue carts at the front desk on the 4th floor to load up your boxed items to bring to your vehicle.
    • Your vehicle will only be allowed to park for 15 minutes in Couch Place alley or on State Street; come to the front desk to receive a voucher.
    • Print your parking certificate ahead of your vehicle arriving. You will not be allowed on State Street without the parking certificate.

Residence Hall Loading Zones

  • SAIC has partnered with the City of Chicago to ensure that the constructions taking place in front of the 162 building will be adjusted to allow a smooth move-out process. We’ll be managing traffic closely to keep things moving:

    • The Couch Place alley will be closed to regular access. Trucks, SUVs, vans, or U-Hauls will not be allowed in the alley.
    • Cars will be lined up against the building to ensure two lanes for flow of traffic while in Couch Place alley.

  • SAIC does not have the permit for the parking lot surrounding the Buckingham—if you want to use this space, it is at your own expense. Do not load your vehicle from the back door of the Buckingham unless you are choosing to pay for parking; you will receive a ticket if you are in the parking lot more than a few minutes. Street parking is available south lane of Van Buren Street, from the Buckingham west to Wabash Avenue, and the east lane of Wabash Avenue, south of Van Buren Street. Remember to only use this space when you are actively loading your vehicle. If you need to park while you are packing, you may pay for the use of the parking lot surrounding the Buckingham or pay for street parking.

  • Jones Hall residents can load their vehicles in the south lane of Madison Street anywhere between State Street and Dearborn Street. Remember to only use this space when you are actively loading your vehicle. If you need to park while you are packing, you may use the parking garage at 181 North Dearborn Street. We have discounted parking passes that are used when you vacate the garage.

Move-Out Instructions

  • Attend the Final Floor Meeting. In April, RAs will host the final floor meeting of the semester. It is important that residents attend this floor meeting, as it will highlight move-out instructions and answer any questions you may have.

Pack Your Belongings. After a semester of school, you will have accumulated a lot of items which can make packing to move out a challenge. For this reason, boxes will be available for purchase. Boxes are for sale at the 162 North State Street and Jones Hall Residence Life desks (3rd floor of Jones Hall, 4th floor of 162 North State Street). Boxes may only be purchased with students' ARTICard; cash and checks will not be accepted.

Clean Your Room. Residents are responsible for cleaning their entire room, including kitchen and bathroom, to return it to the state it was in at move-in. Limited cleaning supplies, including brooms and dustpans, will be available at the hall desk. Residence Life anticipates normal wear and tear on a room during the year; however, any excessive damage or cleaning needs will incur additional charges. If you are concerned about damage to the room, or cleaning arrangements with your roommate(s), please speak with your RA. Residence Life staff will go into the room after you have moved out to check for any damages beyond wear and tear.

Remove Your Items from the Room and Common Areas. All items must be removed from the room and common areas, including the Bike Room, Media Room, Common Area, Kitchen, and Studios. (Don't forget the refrigerator and the kitchen cabinets!) To assist in the move-out process, residents will be allowed to check out carts from the office. As move-out is a very busy time, we will ask that residents only check out a cart once they are ready to move belongings. If your items remain after May 12, they may be discarded. Jones Hall residents must remove their bikes from the Bike Room by May 1 at 5:00 p.m.

Discard Trash and Unwanted Items: In an effort to keep items out of landfills, Residence Life will accept donations; specific items accepted will be announced. Please donate items in the following places: 162 N. State Street, 4th floor office; Jones Hall, 3rd floor office; Buckingham basement. Residents should place all trash in the designated trash rooms on their floor.

Check Out of the Room. Students must complete a check-out form. The process is simplified for an easy and quick departure.

162 North State Street and Jones Residents: Once you have removed all of your belongings and cleaned your room, scan the Check-Out QR Code. Find the QR code on the Check Out Checklist on your door (posted around May 1), in the lobby of your buildings, or at the Residence Life Desk (Jones, 3rd floor; 162 North State Street, 4th floor). Once you have filled out the form, you are free to leave and start your summer break!

Buckingham Residents: Once you have removed all of your belongings and cleaned your room, you will need to complete a check-out envelope with Buckingham security. You will complete the necessary information and place your key card, bedroom key, and mailbox key in the envelope. Once that is complete, scan the Check-Out QR Code. Once you have filled out the form, you are free to leave and start your summer break!

This final step will let us know that you have officially moved out. Failure to complete the final step in the check-out process could result in a $50 improper check-out fee.

Move-In

Spring 2026 move-in for new students is January 22. Residence Life staff will be on site to ensure you are in the correct location and to answer any questions you may have.

Residents who plan to move into their housing assignments outside of move-in times will need to check in at the security desk to receive further instructions. Residence Life staff will not be available on site to assist with move-in assistance.

    • Sign up for a move-in time through the SAIC Housing Portal. Students will be notified via their SAIC email when they are able to sign up for a move-in time.
    • Ensure Health Services has up-to-date vaccine records via SAIC Health Services Patient Portal.
    • Plan to bring only necessary items with you at move-in. Ship items with Collegeboxes if appropriate.
    • Ensure you have an emergency contact listed in Peoplesoft Self Service
    • Identify if you will bring a guest(s) with you to assist in the process. Students may have up to three guests accompany them during move-in.

    New Students only:

    • Sign the ARTICard/U-Pass contracts sent to your SAIC email address, and submit your photo for the ARTICard student ID. The ARTICard ID is the door key for 162 N. State St. and Jones Hall. Students will receive communication to their SAIC email for a personalized link which should be used to submit your photo.

  • Additionally, you may ship some belongings to the residence halls prior to your arrival. Packages should be addressed to the student and include their room number, which can be viewed on the SAIC Housing Portal. Students can also use Ship-to-School, a program offered by CollegeBoxes, to help you get your items from home to campus.

Students will not have access to their room/the residence halls before their designated move-in time. Students are encouraged to review the floor plans and video tours of each room style, which can be found here. If you have specific questions about your room, contact Residence Life at reslife@saic.edu.
