  • Summer Resident Advisors (SRAs) live in the residence halls with ECPSI students to provide day-to-day support and assistance in the event of a crisis. They are present to help students learn about Chicago, SAIC resources, and what it's like to be a student at SAIC, and are supported by the residence hall director, a professional staff member who lives on-site.

SRAs are current SAIC undergraduate or graduate students who are excited to spend their summer working with the ECP Summer Institute. They are eager to get to know residents through planning social activities during non-class times.

  • Students typically share a room with one or two of their peers, and may also request to live with a specific person when filling out registration info, or they can email the residence life team at least three weeks prior to arrival so that we may try to accommodate you.

  • The following is provided in rooms during your stay:

    • Kitchenette
    • Bathroom
    • Drafting tables

Residential Move-In & Move Out

Residential students will begin their ECPSI experience by moving into Jones Hall, 7 West Madison Street, on the Sunday before the first week of class between 11:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m. Students may not move into the residence hall early. Students arriving after the designated move-in time should notify Residence Life in advance at saic-reslife-ecp@saic.edu.

Residential students will end their ECPSI experience by moving out of Jones Hall between 9:00 a.m. and noon on the Saturday following the last day of class. Students are allowed to move out early (e.g., Friday evening) as long as a plan has been made in advance.

Students participating in concurrent sessions do not need to move out/move in between sessions; arrangements are made for the student to stay in the same room for four to six weeks.

  • During the move-in window, drive to State and Madison Streets (across from Target) to begin the check-in process.

    • The student will exit the car to check in while the driver is directed to an unloading spot along Madison Street. The student should bring their government-issued photo ID and their cell phone.
    • Carts and speed pack boxes will be available for use. Limited staff will be available to assist in unloading.
    • Take all of your items to your room, returning any carts as quickly as possible.
    • The driver will move the car to a permanent parking spot.
    • Unpack your belongings and settle in!

Meal Plans and Dining Options

Students who live on campus for ECPSI are automatically enrolled into a meal plan. $105 per week is auto-loaded onto students’ ARTICard IDs. These ID cards are then able to be used as a debit card to pay for food in our on-campus food halls and cafes. Dining service will be available throughout Sessions 1–5. Visit the Where to Eat page for updated hours.

Students living on campus will also have a kitchenette in their residence equipped with a fridge, stove-top, and microwave to prepare small meals in.

Supervision and Free Time

While ECPSI gives students a lot of independence, there’s also a clear structure to help everyone stay safe and on track. You’ll have free time during lunch, between classes, in the evenings before curfew, and on weekends—but there are still check-ins throughout the day to make sure everyone is where they’re supposed to be.

Here’s what the daily check-in schedule looks like:

    • 7:30 a.m. (every day): Earliest time students can leave the residence hall
    • 9:00 a.m. (Monday–Friday): Class attendance
    • 12:00 p.m. (Monday–Friday): Lunch break
    • 1:00 p.m. (Monday–Friday): Post-lunch attendance
    • 6:00 p.m. (Tuesday & Thursday): Workshop attendance
    • 10:00 p.m. (every night): Curfew (residential students only)

Teaching assistants keep track of student attendance during course meeting times, including field trips and evening workshops. During class time, instructors and teaching assistants supervise any travel on public transportation (CTA), and residence life staff lead optional, supervised evening and weekend outings. While students are encouraged to explore the city, students are not to use the CTA without supervision.

This program doesn't offer constant, 100 percent supervision, so if that’s what you or your family expect, it’s important to consider whether ECPSI is the right fit. If your student is responsible, open to some independence, and excited about making the most of their time in Chicago and getting a taste of a college experience, this would be a great program for you.

Commuting to ECPSI

Living in SAIC’s residence hall is not required, but is highly recommended. Prior ECPSI students have mentioned the benefits of living on campus, such as easy access to classrooms and studios, engaging with other students, and engaging in residence life activities. Guests, including ECPSI students who opt to commute to campus, are not permitted in the residence hall.

Safety

Residence hall and school policies have been established to assist in creating a comfortable living environment that is conducive to artistic and personal growth and development. All ECPSI students are expected to adhere to the ECP Summer Institute Handbook, as well as the Student Rights and Responsibilities section in the SAIC Student Handbook, as outlined above.

Incidentals and Spending

Students are advised to use an ATM card or Traveler's Checks for personal spending in an effort to avoid carrying around large amounts of cash. Many banks and automated teller machines are located within a few blocks of the residence hall (Chase, Citibank, and First Chicago, among others) for withdrawals.

SAIC cannot cash personal checks, nor will most banks. If you need to wire money to a student, the closest Currency Exchange to the residence hall is located at 100 West Randolph Street (312.236.4811).
