Bio

Kyle Stephen Dunn (b. Springfield, IL) (he/they) is an artist and educator who currently teaches at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in the Continuing Studies Department and the Photography Department, where he also received a BFA (2015) and MFA (2025) in Photography. Dunn uses simple yet powerful gestures to explore themes of loss, love, and the importance of community. His recent work focuses on the derelict histories of LGBTQIA+ communities in rural towns of Central Illinois and how they relate to his personal experiences.

Description

This course focuses on the foundations of photography and the various ways to use a digital camera. Students examine how to choose and shoot personally meaningful subjects in content and contemporary contexts. Instruction includes capturing and printing images in black and white and color, and investigating digital photo editing. Discussions on the history of photography and individual and group critiques are included. Students must supply their digital SLR (single-lens reflex) or mirrorless camera with manual functions; no point-and-shoot cameras.

Description

Light is a powerful tool for creative control. In this course, students learn to observe, measure, and manipulate light to enhance their photographic work. Through hands-on practice, they explore the interplay of natural, ambient, and artificial light sources¿including on-camera and hand-held flash¿within existing conditions. By understanding metering and light mixing techniques, students gain the skills to shape mood, depth, and atmosphere in their images. This course provides a strong foundation in lighting, equipping students with practical techniques to elevate their work with confidence and precision.
