Bio

Alex Wieder (he/him) is a lens-based artist, fine-art printer, educator, and jack-of-many-trades. After earning his BFA in Photography from Columbia College Chicago (2014), he established himself in the fine-art printing and photography industry, known for his breadth of skills and knowledge pertaining to all things photographic, archival, color-critical, and technological. He previously served as technical director of LATITUDE Chicago for nearly 10 years, and still practices as a freelance printer technician, project consultant, and educator. He currently serves as the photography facilities manager at SAIC, and is both an Adobe Certified Professional in Photoshop as well as a trained Piezography printer.

This graduate-level course provides an in-depth exploration of the technical and conceptual aspects of photography. Students will gain certifications to use department equipment and facilities, while learning about workflow, acquisition, and output capabilities. The course emphasizes both technical skill development and individual project work, allowing students to troubleshoot and resolve challenges while producing work for critique. With a focus on both analog and digital processes, the course accommodates students with diverse technical backgrounds, offering advanced training in photographic methods and tools.
