Alum Scheherazade Tillet Interviewed by The Cut In Honor of Her New Exhibition

Alum Scheherazade Tillet (MA 2005) was recently featured in The Cut alongside her sister Salamishah Tillet. The Tillet sisters discussed their two shows hosted just blocks apart in Newark, New Jersey. Black Girl Play is an exhibition of Scheherazade’s work at Project for Empty Space while Picturing Black Girlhood: Moments of Possibility is a show at Express Newark and is co-curated by Salamishah. The exhibition features art by more than 85 artists including work by Assistant Professor of Photography LaToya Ruby Frazier and current student Ángelina Cofer (BA 2025). “Our focus on Black girls is a natural evolution of our decades of work as feminists, activists, artists on sexual and racial violence,” Salamishah shared. “We wanted to invest in, elevate, and pay sustained attention to Black girls, who are undervalued in society.”
