Professor Arnold J. Kemp was recently announced as the 2022 recipient of the Ellis-Beauregard Foundation’s Visual Arts Fellowship. In addition to receiving a $25,000 fellowship, Kemp will receive a $5,000 shipping fee in order for his artwork to be transported to the Center for Maine Contemporary Art in Rockland for his solo exhibit. “This award from the Ellis Beauregard Foundation comes at a critical time,” Kemp stated, “[It] reminds me of the importance of persistent focus on one’s vision and resistance to forces that might take one off one’s path in life and art.”

Known for multidisciplinary work which involves painting, print, sculpture, and poetry, Kemp’s art explores themes of identity, stereotypes, and the redefinition of Blackness in today’s contemporary world. The artist has had solo exhibitions in San Francisco, New York, and Chicago and also became a Guggenheim Fellow in 2012.
