Mid-Career Survey of Alum Sonya Clark Featured in Hyperallergic
School of the Art Institute of Chicago alum Sonya Clark (BFA 1993) is featured in Hyperallergic for her mid-career survey We Are Each Other, presented across the Houston Museum of African American Culture and the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft. While Clark is best known for her use of human hair as medium, the exhibition shifts focus to her fiber and collaborative works. Long recognized for projects like The Hair Craft Project (2014), which framed hairstyling as both artistry and fiber practice, Clark has consistently merged history and material culture into participatory works. Highlights include The Beaded Prayers Project (1998–ongoing), cyanotype constellations created in workshops, and her Monumental Cloth series (2019), which re-centers the little-known Confederate truce flag as a collective means of confronting the symbolism of the Confederate battle flag and reframing surrender as a deliberate act of relinquishing entrenched systems of white supremacy.
