The American Academy of Arts and Letters is an honor society of the country’s 250 leading architects, artists, composers, and writers. Each year it elects new members as vacancies occur. In addition to Sedaris, this year's inductees include multimedia artist Meredith Monk, poet-playwright Claudia Rankine, poet-essayist Grace Schulman, author-essayist Ian Frazier, author-conservationist Terry Tempest Williams, and violinist-composer Chen Yi. Four Pulitzer Prize winners including playwright Suzan-Lori Parks, fiction writer Edward P. Jones, historian Stacy Schiff, and poet Natasha Trethewey were also inducted into the academy.
"I sat at my desk and I said, 'Oh my God' over and over again...," says Sedaris about reading the letter from the academy. Read more about all the inductees on the American Academy of Arts and Letters website.
