Filmmaker and alum Apichatpong Weerasethakul (MFA 1998, HON 2011) won the Gold Hugo Award at the 57th Chicago International Film Festival, the top award for the festival. Weerasethakul received the award for his newest film Memoria, which stars actress Tilda Swinton as a Scottish orchid farmer in Colombia who is haunted by mysterious sounds. “We are overjoyed,” Weerasethakul shared. “Chicago was like my second home where I discovered another kind of cinema in the classroom, at Chicago Filmmakers, the [Gene Siskel] Film Center, Facets and the Music Box, and of course at the Chicago International Film Festival.” Weerasethakul also won the Jury Prize for Memoria at Cannes Film Festival earlier this year.
