Alums’ Work Featured in New York Times List of Most Influential Sculptures

Three School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) alums were recently featured in the New York Times article “The 25 Sculptures That Define the Modern Age.” Four renowned artists joined MOMA PS1 chief curator Ruba Katrib (BA 2004) to debate the most influential sculptures since 1945. Their selections included Claes Oldenburg’s (SAIC 1951–54, HON 1979) iconic 1961 installation The Store. A seminal work of Pop Art, Oldenburg created a fully functional shop in a Manhattan storefront stocked with his signature oversized, lumpy imitations of consumer goods. Also featured was Untitled 1990 (Pad Thai) by Rirkrit Tiravanija (MFA 1986), a performance piece in which Tiravanija prepared bowls of noodles for visitors to New York’s Paula Allen Gallery.
