Health Services During COVID-19

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to impact many aspects of the US healthcare system, Health Services aims to continue providing access to care for our students. Our board-certified Nurse Practitioners and Registered Nurses strive to continue offering our most requested services while providing high quality, patient centered, and evidence-based care. Telehealth, in addition to in-person visits when necessary, will be utilized during the 2020-2021 school year.

Health Services staff will serve as a primary resource for all students with health concerns related to COVID-19 including:

  • Reporting of new symptoms from daily at home symptom check 
  • Reporting of COVID-19 test results
  • Telehealth evaluation of COVID-19 symptoms
  • Referrals for off site COVID-19 testing
  • Contact tracing within the SAIC community
  • Support for students in isolation and quarantine

Supporting our campus community in mitigating the risk of COVID-19 will be a primary focus of Health Services during the pandemic. Scheduling an Appointment

To schedule an appointment or consultation, call Health Services at 312-499-4288. All appointments, for any reason, must be scheduled. There will be no walk-in visits. Immunization appointments will be scheduled for an in-person visit.  All other visits will begin with a telehealth appointment. The healthcare provider will determine during the initial telehealth appointment if additional in-person evaluation is necessary. Anyone who presents to Health Services will be required to adhere to safeguards that are outlined in the SAIC Make Ready Plan. Keeping students, staff, and the SAIC community safe and healthy is our highest priority. These safeguards will make our services available to as many students as possible. 

Students who are under quarantine for any reason, have been exposed to COVID-19, or are exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19 should not present to Health Services in person. Same day telehealth appointments will be available for COVID-19 concerns by calling Health Services.

Telehealth at SAIC

Telehealth will be used as a health solution that connects students and providers through real-time audio and video technology. This method of care has many benefits including greater access to care, flexibility for students to interact with providers within their own environment, reduced risk of unnecessary exposure, maintaining physical distancing per CDC recommendations, and reduced wait times. 

SAIC Health Services uses the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) certified Zoom technology for our telehealth visits. Zoom can be used from a webcam-equipped smartphone, tablet, laptop, or PC. Zoom can also be used with any mobile or landline phone for an audio only visit. Instructions for using Zoom will be provided when a telehealth appointment is scheduled.
