Leading Faculty Through the Academic Accommodations Process
The 2025-26 Academic Year Begins...
and with it we welcome new and returning faculty and students. This year, the Center for Teaching and Learning partnered with the Disability and Learning Resource Center, the Wellness Center, and the chair of faculty to introduce faculty to the academic accommodations process. A recording of this important seminar is available for all faculty to watch.
Nearly 40% of SAIC's students receive an academic adjustment due to a diagnosed disability These adjustments include a several options, ranging from access to educational technology to attendance modifications such as the ability to leave class in case a student experiences a disability related symptom.
Martin Perales and the Disability and Learning Resource Center
Martin Perales (DLRC academic support coordinate) led a thoughtful presentation about the accommodation process. He shared the legal reasons why accommodations exist and addressed how they provide all students with an opportunity to access SAIC's resources. The presentation expertly demonstrated why accommodations are necessary and empowered faculty to model the disability justice framework in their course or courses.
The Center for Teaching and Learning Presents New Faculty Resources
Matthew Roberts (CTL director) then discussed the extensive research the CTL conducted to develop resources for faculty to implement academic adjustments in their course or courses. In consultation with the DLRC and SAIC's divisional deans, the CTL created a Canvas course on the accommodations process and developed several tools for faculty to create equitable and accessible learning environments.
