Two SAIC alums, Jeanine Oleson (BFA 1995) and Dread Scott (BFA 1988), were awarded highly competitive Rome Prizes for the 2023–24 season. Prizes and fellowships were given to just 36 of the 988 American artists and scholars who applied, and will go towards supporting ongoing independent work through a stipend, a workspace, and room and board at The American Academy in Rome.

Oleson, who is an interdisciplinary artist specializing in using humor to create objects, images, videos, and performances, was awarded the Nancy B. Negley Rome Prize. Scott’s interdisciplinary work is often participatory, and focuses on, among other things, the Black experience in America. Scott was awarded the Abigail Cohen Rome Prize.
