Alum Rashid Johnson (SAIC 2003–04, HON 2018) was recently spotlighted on CNN’s series Champions for Change, a collection of stories highlighting individuals who work toward enriching their community. Interviewed by CNN anchor Don Lemon, Johnson discusses uplifting young artists, advocating for artists of color, and dismantling barriers to cultural institutions. “One of the things I’m interested in outside of helping younger artists is how institutions function. Who are the gatekeepers? And who lets who in? What artworks are invited into the conversation?” Johnson shared. Johnson is currently working with the Guggenheim Museum to include more voices and create opportunities for all artists, including a paid internship.
