Artist and alum Renluka Maharaj (MFA 2017) recently spoke with Elle about decolonizing narratives, returning to her roots, and finding one’s voice in art. Maharaj is an Indo-Caribbean artist who transforms the archives of a French photographer who captured Indian women laborers through a culturally appropriated lens, turning the photos into a colorful, powerful reimagining. “It became important that I lift [the women] out of these archives and re-present them in a respectful, beautiful, engaging, and confronting way. Given my fragmented history, any one of these women could be a relative and I felt it was my responsibility to protect them,” Maharaj shared.
