Commencement stage or haute couture runway? The first in-person Commencement ceremony since 2019 was the perfect chance for School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) graduates to showcase their styles. We snapped some shots of our favorite looks outside of the Wintrust Arena before these soon-to-be alums crossed the stage to receive their diplomas.

Raven Smith (BFA 2022)

“My favorite color is orange, and has been for a long time. I was pretty much like, ‘You can’t do black. You gotta do orange. You gotta stand out.’ My favorite part of the outfit is the dragonfly on my hat.”

Hayden Wentworth (BFA 2022)

“I made my outfit. My favorite part is probably the pockets. They say Awesome Possum on the inside. It’s something my parents have always said, and possums are a huge thing in Texas, where I’m from.”

Assata Mason (BFA 2022)

“My outfit was inspired by armor–I paint armor. Paris Fashion Week is the one moment in life I would like to experience. I don’t know if I’ll ever get there. If I could do anything in life, that would be it.”

Khoi Le (BFA 2022)

“I made the bow last night. Last-minute addition, in true SAIC fashion. My main style influence would be Alexander McQueen.”

Keny De La Peña (MFA 2022)

“My sister bought me this stole. It’s made out of the same material as a serape, so I get to walk in referencing being an MFA and being Mexican.”
