The Department of Writing at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) seeks students who thrive in a challenging, self-directed, and experimental writing program. In this department, the literary arts are abundantly a living and open field where you are provided unique opportunities in which you can explore the concept of creative writing.

The Department of Writing welcomes students who are not only admitted to an undergraduate or graduate writing degree program, but also students who wish to pursue writing as part of their interdisciplinary study at SAIC.

Because the department is fully integrated into SAIC’s studio practice, students have the unique opportunity to explore hybrid writing and adapt studio practices in their work. The possibilities are endless.

In addition to developing unique literary work, the interdisciplinary focus of the school has helped to inspire writing students to form collectives, small presses, storefront galleries, and theater groups that outlast their tenure at SAIC and revitalize the local and international literary scene.
