Jeffrey Gibson and Jennie C. Jones Awarded 2025 Met Commissions

School of the Art Institute of Chicago alums Jeffrey Gibson (BFA 1995) and Jennie C. Jones (BFA 1991) were chosen for the 2025 Met Commissions, reported by ARTnews.

Gibson’s practice focuses on Indigenous and queer identities. For the commission, he will make four sculptures of ancestral spirit figures to stand within the facade’s niches along 5th Avenue. Jones’ work investigates modernism and legacies of Black avant-garde music. The commission will be Jones’ first multi-work outdoor installation and displayed in the museum’s rooftop garden.

The Met’s Director Max Hollein said “both [artists] see the potential for beauty and form to carry the potency of individual and cultural histories.”

The works will be on view from September 2025 through May 2026.
