  • Docks are open from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., with the exception of the Sullivan Center dock. See specific information about the Sullivan Center dock below.
  • No idling trucks are allowed in any of the docks, and during load in/out, vehicles need to have their hazard lights on.
  • No trucks with heights greater than 13 feet are allowed, and tractor-trailer trucks must be approved by SAIC prior to delivery.
  • All trucks must be equipped with a lift gate and must provide their own moving equipment (pallet jack, dollies, etc).
  • After the dock coordinator is called, please allow 10 to 15 minutes for a response.
  • Do not leave anything on the docks or corridors of any buildings.
  • Use of the dock should not take more than 15 minutes. If it is known delivery/pick up will take more than 15 minutes, it is required to contact dock coordinator at least 48 hours in advance.

Loading Docks

Use the loading docks at each building if you need to move extraordinarily large or heavy packages in and out of the buildings. Idling is not permitted. It is recommended that trucks have a lift gate. When parked all cars/trucks should have their hazard lights on. All drivers must provide their own carts. No trucks with a height of greater than 13 feet will be permitted. Straight trucks are preferred.

Contact the dock coordinator at 312.446.1441 at least 48 hours in advance of the anticipated delivery to make delivery arrangements. After the dock coordinator is called, please allow 10–15 minutes for a response.

SAIC reserves the right to tow any vehicle parked on a loading dock for more than 15-minutes, unless prior arrangements have been made with the dock coordinator. SAIC reserves the right to revoke loading dock access for students and employees who abuse loading dock privileges.

Residence Halls

Students are not typically permitted to arrange large-scale deliveries/pick-ups that require the use of a loading dock/loading space in the residence halls. Residence Life will communicate with students who are moving in or out of the residence halls regarding these processes and resources related to them. To inquire about the use of residence halls loading docks/loading spaces, please contact the Residence Life office at 312.629.6870.

Freight Elevator Access

MacLean Center, 112 South Michigan Avenue
There are two freight elevators in MacLean Center, one close to the lobby labeled Car 6, and another very close to the dock area labeled Car 7. Car 6 is wider than Car 7, however Car 7 is taller than Car 6. Car 6 is the recommended because it is larger and goes to most floors within the building and does not require swipe card access like Car 7. Both elevators are available 24 hours.

Sharp Building, 37 South Wabash Avenue
The freight elevator is located in the dock area of the building and open to all staff, faculty, and students. The elevator can access every floor of the building, however an ID swipe is required to access the basement and 6th floor. The freight elevator is open during the building’s hours of operation (7:00 a.m. to 12:00am).

Sullivan Center, 36 South Wabash Avenue
There are two docks that have two sets of freight elevators. On the State Street side there are two large freight elevators but they only go to 7, 12, and 13. On the Wabash side, the freight elevators are smaller, however they access all SAIC floors. Both sets are on a key system, so the building’s facilities coordinator needs to be contacted to arrange a time to provide access. Freight access must be scheduled to move large items within the building, only 2-wheel carts will be allowed to use the passenger elevators. We request advance notice for use of the elevators. The building coordinator is available Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

For the full procedure on how to reserve a freight elevator, click here.

280 Building, 280 South Columbus Drive
The freight elevator is located near the dock entrance. It is open to all faculty, staff, and students. No swipe is needed to operate the elevator.

Residence Halls, 162 N. State Street Residences and Jones Hall
Neither the residence hall has freight elevators. To make a large delivery or pick up, the object to be transported should be measured to ensure that it will fit into the buildings’ general elevators.
