Our Departmental Mission
The department's mission is to provide a comprehensive art therapy education that emphasizes development of the artist/art therapist, prepares graduates to function as art therapists in a variety of settings, and fosters critical engagement within social and cultural contexts.
Leading Practitioners, Experience, and Connections
The department integrates learning in studio art, art therapy, and counseling with hands-on clinical experience.
Graduate students complete rigorous coursework in preparation for professional certification with the Art Therapy Credentials Board and the Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor exam in the state of Illinois.
The MA in Art Therapy and Counseling program has been approved by the American Art Therapy Association since 1989.

Undergraduates interested in the field can choose from several introductory course options that incorporate art therapeutic concepts both as an introduction to the profession as well as a means of complementing their studio practices.
