Personal Statement
Magdalena Moskalewicz is an art historian, curator, and editor who researches art from (the former) Eastern Europe from the early avant-gardes until today. She was awarded a PhD in art history from Adam Mickiewicz University, in 2012, for her research into experiments with painting in Poland in the 1960s, and has published internationally on abstract art, assemblage and conceptualism—as well as contemporary art practices. She has also researched transnational networks of Eastern European neo-avantgardes and circulation of exhibitions of Polish modern art during the Cold War. In 2012-15, Moskalewicz served as Andrew W. Mellon Postdoctoral C-MAP Fellow at The Museum of Modern Art in New York, where she led a research group focusing on experimental art from Central and Eastern Europe as a part of MoMA’s global research initiative, C-MAP.
In her scholarly, curatorial, and editorial work, Moskalewicz critically investigates local (art) histories and representations of identities in order to reshape dominant historical narratives. To that end, she curated Halka/Haiti 18°48'05''N 72°23'01''W: C.T. Jasper and Joanna Malinowska for the Polish Pavilion at the 56th Venice Biennale in 2015 (Jean Goldman Book Prize for the accompanying book.) Her most recent curatorial and editorial project, The Travellers: Voyage and Migration in New Art from Central and Eastern Europe, examines the entwinement of migration, nationalism and the postsocialist condition (exhibitions at Zacheta–National Gallery of Art, Warsaw, 2016 and Kumu Art Museum, Tallinn, 2017-18; book published by Lugemik, 2017). As editor, Moskalewicz ran the Polish contemporary art monthly magazine, Arteon, and later spearheaded a number of digital humanities publications for MoMA’s digital platform for collaborative research, post (post.at.moma.org).
Before joining SAIC, Moskalewicz was Visiting Professor in International Art Histories at the Carnegie Mellon University School of Art in Pittsburgh.
