ebere agwuncha (b.1997, chicago) is a designer, maker, and artist based in chicago via anambra state, nigeria. her dexterous practice aims to hybridize various materials and craft including wood, ceramic, and weaving. Through creating functional ‘care filled object(s)’ and speculative installations, she aims to preserve igbo stories through more expansive iterations using old and new techniques to craft. she pushes the cusp of perfection - or imperfection - while intimately using her hands to physicalize her ideas. They will be an inaugural artist-in-residence with the sculpture department with the school of the art institute of chicago, spring of 2022.
ebere received a bachelors of industrial design degree from iowa state university in 2019. Since, they have worked with several interdisciplinary projects and studios including in care of Black women, Norman Teague Design Studios, Alt Space Chicago, ‘Mobilize! Creative Blocks, Collective Dreams’, Okpara House, The Buxton Initiative and others. She is also a 3arts 2021 Make a Wave Visual Artist recipient.
As an all around craftsperson, she is currently working as a studio assistant with Studio Herron, a design studio that focuses on textiles, furniture and objects. keep an eye out for their upcoming show with the comfort station this may of 2022.
