ART INSTITUTE ORGANIZES SIXTH OFFICIAL STAFF AND FACULTY ART EXHIBITION
ARTwork 6 Showcases Art Created by Employees of the Museum and the School More Than 165 Artists’ Works on View at the Sullivan Galleries January 19–February 1, 2013
The Art Institute of Chicago is presenting an exhibition by a diverse group of artists who are also staff and faculty members of its museum and school. Entitled ARTwork 6, this assembly of work in a broad range of media is only the sixth officially sponsored staff showing in the Art Institute’s 120-year history. The exhibition will be on view for two weeks at the Sullivan Galleries, 33 South State Street, 7th Floor, from January 19 through February 1, 2013. Sullivan Galleries is an extension of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC).
Almost one year in the planning, the 2013 ARTwork exhibition highlights the many artists who are also employees of both institutions. A call for entries went out to almost 2,000 employees of AIC and SAIC—full- and part-time staff and faculty, special projects staff, and adjunct faculty members were encouraged to participate. Artists who are both self-taught and formally trained were asked to submit samples of their work; performance contributors submitted a one-page proposal or a tape.
An all-volunteer ARTwork exhibition planning committee of 25 employees from 18 different museum and school departments reviewed submissions and planned installation of one piece by each artist. Media represented in the show range widely—from photography, drawings, prints, paintings, and sculpture, to mixed media and video installations.
An opening reception with performances will be held on Friday, January 18, 5:30–7:30 p.m. The exhibition is free and open to the public. Sullivan Galleries is open Tuesday–Saturday, 11:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m. For more information: saic.edu/exhibitions or 312.629.6635
