900 North Michigan Shops in conjunction with the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) present a collaborative exhibition space, SAIC at 900. Located on level six of 900 Shops across from Bloomingdale’s, the SAIC at 900 space showcases rotating exhibits of art and design by SAIC students and alumni.
A leader in educating artists, designers, and scholars since 1866, SAIC comprises a community of more than 17,000 alumni and over 3,200 students from across the United States and 64 countries. A select group will be chosen to display their work in the 900 Shops’ exhibition space through October 2014. SAIC at 900 offers an unparalleled opportunity to encounter both acclaimed and up-and-coming artists and designers.
The first artist to be featured at 900 Shops is SAIC alumnus Jeremiah Jones (MFA 2013), who creates formal experiments in animation and video. For this project he looked to historical representations of the American West as depicted by the painter Albert Bierstadt. Jones created work composed of images he collected while retracing routes of Western exploration.
In looking at these places and images, he considered how our contemporary thinking is inextricably tied to the very myths we criticize and rewrite. Jones's work has been shown nationally and internationally, including the Museum of Modern Art New York and the Guggenheim Museum, New York City.
SAIC at 900 will run through the end of October 2014 and will showcase a variety of SAIC artists. The exhibitions will be featured on level six of 900 North Michigan Shops, seven days a week during normal shopping center hours.
