Walter Hood (MFA 2013) and his Oakland, California, based design firm, Hood Design Studio were recently spotlighted in an article in Architectural Digest. In the article, Hood’s attraction to eccentric or strange qualities within architecture is examined. The article describes how Hood is drawn to this quality in people, “Not only do these qualities help him ground his work in culture, history, geography, and story, but they make it, at its essence, more human”. Hood recently received a 2019 MacArthur Fellowship, a 2019 Dorothy and Lillian Gish Prize, and a 2019 Knight Public Spaces Fellowship. Additionally, in 2017 Hood was awarded the 2017 Academy of Arts and Letters Architecture Award.
