It seems that when PBS thinks of Chicago, they think of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. On the forthcoming Windy City-themed episode of the network’s Art in the 21st Century, four artists receive the spotlight, and three are members of SAIC’s illustrious community. According to a recent article in the Sun-Times, the September 16 episode will showcase the work of Fashion program director Nick Cave, visiting professor Theaster Gates, and internationally-renowned alum Chris Ware (SAIC 1991–93).
“The series will showcase the geography, architecture, society, culture, and heritage of each location,” writes reporter Hedy Weiss. The show’s executive producer, Eve Moros Ortega, tells Weiss that the program’s sense of regionalism offers a fresh spin. “Using the sounds, colors, and energy of the city as a landscape that artists respond to and interact with,” she says, “the films expand beyond the studio to explore each artist’s engagement with their communities and the world around them.”
