SAIC faculty member Sarah Ross (Sculpture and Art Education) and Ryan Griffis, professor at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, explore the effect of global trade on Beardstown, Illinois, in the exhibition Between the Bottomlands & the World on view at the Newport Visual Art Center. Through video, photographs, and narrative writing, Ross and Griffis tell the story of Beardstown, a place representative of many small towns that faced direct repercussions from the North American Free Trade Agreement. The project was created for Regional Relationships, a group that commissions artists, scholars, writers, and activists to create works that investigate the natural, industrial, and cultural landscapes of a region.
