Rashid Johnson (SAIC 2003–04) began shooting his debut directorial film in Chicago this month. The film, which is based on Richard Wright’s 1940s novel Native Son, tells the story of a Black man in his 20s living in abject poverty on Chicago’s South Side. Johnson explains that he and screenwriter Suzan-Lori Parks, “have been conscious of the times we live in today, and how the novel’s characters may play out in a contemporary world.” Though most of the details are being kept under wraps by the production company Bow & Arrow, you can read more about the project on the Art Newspaper.
