Ni’Ja Whitson (MFA 2007) was awarded the 2019 Creative Capital Award. With the project funding Whitson is developing The Unarrival Experiments, “an interdisciplinary performance project exploring relationships between astrophysics, cosmology, Blackness, Trans embodiedness and premature death via a notion of the vaporous body.” As a gender-nonconforming/transmogrifying artist, Whitson brings together African diasporic practices to experiment with gender, sexuality, race, and spirit.
