This week, the Chicago Sun-Times highlighted Jennifer Reeder (MFA 1996) for her work directing Signature Move, a cross-cultural lesbian romance based in Chicago. The movie centers on a Pakistani-American lawyer falling in love with a Mexican-American bookstore owner, weaving in tension between the lawyer and her conservative Pakistani mother who is unaware she is gay. Despite being a Chicago transplant, Reeder was determined to remain in the city after graduation instead of moving to a coast. That commitment served her well in making Signature Moves because she was able to elevate neighborhoods such as Pilsen and Rogers Park that go underrepresented in Chicago imagery.
