At first glance, Japan would seem quite familiar -- we know Japan from popular culture, anime, manga, fashion, food, and design -- but the deeper we look, Japan appears incomprehensibly different. By traveling in Japan, even briefly, we can begin to recognize subtle, but powerful, differences in approach to narrative, space, and structure, differences rooted deeply within Japanese history and culture. We will travel to Japan to learn not just ABOUT Japan, but to learn FROM Japan, and to learn about ourselves. Through on-site activities, exercises, studio and school visits, and collaborative work, this course will offer students a more complex look into Japan, engendering a process of critical reflection and questioning. Travel to Japan can have us awaken to new insights about our own values, practices, and creative processes, and to rethink our position in the face of the world and its unfathomable complexity.
Credits: 3 cr. STUDIO and/or 3 cr. ARTHI (4000-level)

Program fee: $3,600 (including accommodation in shared rooms, some meals, admission fees, transport during the program; not including airfare).
PLUS Tuition cost per credit: Undergraduate—$1,552 per credit hour Graduate—$1,625 per credit hour.
Airfare: Please note: the air travel is NOT round trip: we will arrive in Japan at Kansai Int’l Airport (Osaka) and depart Japan from Tokyo Narita Airport. Budget at least $1,400 for airfare if flying from the United States. (Note this is only an estimated figure. Actual fare will depend on many variables including airline, number of stopovers, exchange rate fluctuations, ports of departure and return, and date of ticket purchase).
