Welcome to SAIC!
Every semester, the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) holds a New Student Orientation for undergraduates entering the school. The event is designed to introduce students to SAIC and prepare them for the semester ahead.
Spring 2021 Undergraduate New Student Orientation
New Student Orientation will be presented in an engaging online learning environment, including both live and pre-recorded content. You will have the opportunity to engage with students, faculty, and staff, to use Canvas, the campus learning management system, and connect with content designed to help you learn about SAIC and the many resources available to you. Students can began accessing the New Student Orientation course on Canvas beginning Thursday, January 14th at 10:00 am CST. Throughout the month students will engage in a variety of online programming facilitated by our Orientation Leaders, current students who have been at the School for at least one year, to help guide and support the student's transiton to SAIC.
Beginning in early January, make sure to follow these steps to get important information in your transition to classses at SAIC.
Step 1: Ensure your ARTIC Account is set up. This will help you access your email and programs needed for your online orientation.
Step 2: Log in to Canvas. This is how you will log in to New Student Orientation. This course features information and resources to get you started at SAIC and help you with the transition for the start of the year.
Step 3: Download Pronto (searchable in the App Store or Google Play). This will connect you to me and the other students in your group via chat and video. Log in using your shortened version of your ARTIC account with your SAIC email address to see your New Student Orientation group (e.g., firstname.lastname@example.org). Pronto is also available via desktop in Canvas.
Step 4: Participate! Over the next few weeks we'll host programs and provide information to other virtual events to help you get to know more about SAIC. Make sure you're connected in Canvas and Pronto to receive these important event details.
Residence Hall Move-In
Residence Life will send specific room assignments in early January. Students will be allowed to move in on January 12 and 13 and will sign-up for a specific time in early January. This will be enough time for them to quarantine as needed before classes begin! Check out the housing portion of the SAIC website for details about the move-in process. To aid in physical distancing, move-in will be primarily self-service. Students will be required to register for a specific time slot and are strongly encouraged to limit the number of items they bring to campus. Students should consider shipping belongings in advance. Information about shipping belongings via collegeboxes.com can be found on the Residence Life Move-In page.
We look forward to having you in our community this fall as we come together to live, learn, and make. Please do not hesitate to contact email@example.com if you have any questions.
The ARTICard/U-Pass office is located in the Sharp Building, 37 South Wabash Avenue, room 254. It's open Monday–Friday 8:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m. Students make an appointment to pick up their ARTICard and U-Pass in the ARTICard office. You must have a valid government issued ID (driver's license, state ID, or passport) for pick up.
You must be registered full-time to pick up the U-Pass. Transfer students with a U-Pass from another Chicago-area school will not need a new U-Pass. Instead, email firstname.lastname@example.org with the card information so it can be transferred to SAIC.
New and transfer students for whom do not have a photo by the January 8 deadline may apply for their new ARTICard and U-Pass in the ARTICard office.
