Audio Arts began as a new kind of magazine in 1973. The project was conceived by William Furlong and Barry Barker and was made possible by the newly widening availability of portable audio recording devices and cassette tapes. Planning to launch a printed art magazine as a venue for artists, technologist and writers to engage in debate, the editors realized that it would be cheaper to produce tapes than to distribute edited and printed transcriptions of the material they had recorded as intended material for publication. What emerged is a publication that extended the scope of sound within the discourse of art. This series will present a selection of tapes from the collection illustrative of the range of themes engaged by the magazine. Starting from the early years of literary bias and charting the magazines development over time to form its conceptual identity.
