Visiting + Using Each Collection

Flaxman Library is open to SAIC students, faculty and staff without an appointment. Alumni can visit the library but must make an appointment in advance by emailing flaxman@saic.edu. During a visit, they must be escorted into and out of the library. No walk-in appointments allowed. Masks must be worn at all times in SAIC buildings. Please note: Library hours and visitor policies are subject to change in alignment with updates to SAIC’s school-wide policies.

Picking Up Library Materials

You can request circulating Flaxman, I-Share & Interlibrary Loan materials for pickup in the Flaxman Library: Here’s how to use Library Material Pickup:

First: Request Materials

  • Flaxman Library Materials - May take up to 3 days from request to pickup. Instructions are available here.
  • I-Share Books - May take up to 5 days from request to pickup. Instructions are available here.  
  • Interlibrary Loan Books* - May take up to 2 weeks from request to pickup. Instructions are available here
    *Interlibrary Loan should only be used after you’ve tried requesting materials through I-Share. If you only need a few chapters, we recommend requesting PDFs instead for faster access.

Second: Second: Pickup (Once You Get the Email that Materials are Ready)

  • Wait for an Email Confirming Materials are Ready
    For Flaxman Library Materials and Interlibrary Loan Books the email will have a pickup deadline. For I-Share Books the email notes “Please contact the pick-up library for directions on how to schedule and pick up these held materials.” Once you get the email, you’re ready to pick them up without scheduling an appointment.
  • Pickup Your Materials in the Library
    You can check Flaxman and I-Share requests in your library account.
    • If you see any items with the “On Hold Shelf until [date]” status, it is ready to be picked up.
    • If you see the “In Process” status, you should wait until you get the email prompting you that it is ready.

Getting Materials Beyond Flaxman

I-Share and interlibrary loan materials are available to SAIC students, faculty, and staff. You’ll be able to pick items up through the pickup process outlined above. Please expect 3-5 days for I-Share items to be available, and 10+ for Interlibrary Loan items. For articles or book chapters, you can also fill out the Interlibrary Loan/Scanning Request Form to request PDF copies (which are typically emailed in a few days).

Returning Library Materials

SAIC community members with access to the Sharp Building will be able to return materials using the metal book & media drop boxes in the Sharp lobby or in the library during open hours.

Using Online Library Resources

Flaxman Library staff offer expert help and many resources that library users can access online. Please note: when accessing materials off campus, you will need to login using your ARTIC username and password when prompted. If you would like to share links to library materials, be sure to review the Linking to Library Resources & Databases guide for advice.

    • Additionally, Video Data Bank (VDB) has a selection of its collection available on Panopto. If faculty or students need other titles from the collection, please email info@vdb.org outlining your needs, and we will work to add those titles to Panopto.

Research Help + Studio Visits

Research Consultations - We are happy to help students with your research in-person or remotely! To set up a time to meet with a librarian, use Navigate to find the Flaxman Library and set up a Research Consultation appointment. (Information about Navigate is available here.) We can conduct consultations synchronously over Zoom, or asynchronously over email if needed.

Studio Visits - We are excited to offer graduate students a librarian studio visit to connect with a librarian who can offer suggestions about resources to support your research and artistic practice. The librarian will take notes and either offer you some ideas on the spot, or follow up with you afterwards via email. To schedule a studio visit with a librarian, use Navigate to find the Flaxman Library and set up a studio visit appointment. (Information about Navigate is available here.) We can conduct virtual visits over Zoom or come to your studio in-person.

Faculty or Staff Research Consultations - We also provide one-on-one research consultation appointments for SAIC faculty and staff. To set up a meeting, please email your discussion topics and availability to flaxman@saic.edu

Classroom Visits + Library Instruction (In-Person or Virtual)

Flaxman Library - We have updated our Instruction Menu to accommodate all formats of in-person or virtual classes, including both synchronous and asynchronous options such as pre-recorded sessions or Canvas modules that can be added to your course. Library Chat Services

Use the pink tab on the right of our homepage to chat live with a librarian on weekdays. Anytime you see “chat with us,” a librarian is on the other side and eager to help with any questions you have. When we’re not available, you’re always welcome to email us at flaxman@saic.edu. We especially encourage you to take advantage of these services if you’re off-campus!
