Picking Up Library Materials

This fall you can save a trip to the library by requesting circulating Flaxman, I-Share & Interlibrary Loan materials for pickup in the Sharp Building lobby: Monday - Friday, 12:00 - 3:00 PM. Here’s how to use Library Material Pickup:

First: Request Materials

  • Flaxman Library Materials - May take up to 3 days from request to pickup. Instructions are available here.
  • I-Share Books - May take up to 10 days from request to pickup. Instructions are available here.
  • Interlibrary Loan Books* - May take up to 2 weeks from request to pickup. Instructions are available here
*Interlibrary Loan should only be used after you’ve tried requesting materials through I-Share. If you only need a few chapters, we recommend requesting PDFs instead for faster access.

Second: Schedule Your Pickup Appointment

  • For All Request Types
You will receive a separate email for each item, but you only need to make one pickup appointment at a time - all available items will be bundled for your appointment. After your appointment, you can check Flaxman and I-Share requests in your library account. If you see any items with a “On Hold Shelf until [date]” status, you should make another appointment for those items before the deadline (use this link). If you see the “In Process” status, you should wait until you get the email prompting you to schedule for pickup.
  • Flaxman Library Materials + Interlibrary Loan Books
You will receive an email with a deadline and scheduling link when your items are available for pickup.
  • I-Share Books
You will receive an I-Share email that notes “Please contact the pick-up library for directions on how to schedule and pick up these held materials.” Email before the hold date expires for the scheduling link, or if you’re reading this with an I-Share email already, you can use this link and select the Flaxman Materials Pickup Request appointment.

Third: Pickup Your Materials in Sharp - SAIC ID Required

  • Follow the sign for Library Material Pickup posted in the Sharp Lobby and look for our desk (in front of the SITE Gallery).
  • Use the markers on the floor to maintain distance while you wait then present your ID to the library staff member. They’ll give you any materials we have prepared for you.
    • Please don’t sanitize your materials. You will receive a bookmark outlining how to safely use shared materials from the library with your materials.

Getting Materials Beyond Flaxman

I-Share and interlibrary loan materials will be available to SAIC students, faculty, staff and Spring 2020 graduates this fall. You’ll be able to pick items up through the material pickup appointment outlined above. Please expect 8-10 days for I-Share items to be available, and 10+ for Interlibrary Loan items. For articles or book chapters, you can also fill out the Interlibrary Loan Request Form to request PDF copies (which are typically emailed in a few days).

Visiting Flaxman Library

The Library will be open this fall to SAIC students, faculty, staff and Spring 2020 graduates by appointment only. Members of the public will not be able to make appointments at this time. We’ve outlined what each appointment entails, how to schedule it, and what to expect when visiting the library on this page.

Returning Library Materials

SAIC community members with access to the Sharp Building will be able to return materials using the metal book & media drop boxes in the lobby or when picking up requested materials by appointment.

Reminder About Overdue / Lost Items
Overdue/lost status notices and blocks from March 16 were suspended for all materials borrowed through I-Share or Flaxman Library and items were given an October 1, 2020 due date. For Worldshare Interlibrary Loan items (anything borrowed outside of I-Share), please email for more information or with any other concerns.

Using Online Library Resources

Flaxman Library staff offer expert help and many resources that library users can access online. Please note: when accessing materials off campus, you will need to login using your ARTIC username and password when prompted.

The best place to get started when looking for resources is our Remote Learning with Library Resources guide! Check out the links below for advice on where and how to find specific resources using the guide:

  • eBooks, encyclopedias, dictionaries, dissertations and textbooks: Where | How
  • Articles from magazines, journals and newspapers: Where | How
  • Streaming Video: Where | How
    • Additionally, Video Data Bank (VDB) has a selection of its collection available on Panopto. If faculty or students need other titles from the collection, please email outlining your needs, and we will work to add those titles to Panopto.

We additionally have:

Research Help + Studio Visits

Research Consultations - We are happy to help with your research remotely! To set up a time to “meet” with a librarian, please fill out this form and a librarian will get back to you ASAP. We can conduct consultations synchronously over Zoom or Google Meet, or asynchronously over email if needed.

Studio Visits - We are excited to virtually visit studios of those within the SAIC community. While campus is closed, this can be facilitated via Zoom or Google Meet. To schedule a Studio Visit with a librarian, please fill out this form.

Special Collections Research - Use the following pages to discover what options are available from each collection:

Virtual Classroom Visits + Library Instruction

Flaxman Library - We have updated our Instruction Menu to accommodate all formats of classes being held this fall, including new options like librarian created Canvas Modules that can easily be added to your course. To sign up, please use our updated form and a librarian will confirm your request and discuss next steps.

Special Collections - You can also use the following pages to discover what virtual visit or instruction options are available from special collections:

Library Chat Services

Starting mid-August, users will be able to ask a librarian questions by using the new chat boxes that will appear on the library website. This service will allow you to ask questions, get help setting up appointments, and share screens. We are excited to offer this new service to continue providing the best support to our community while not in the library.

Getting More Help Virtually

Have a question this page doesn’t answer? Just ask! You can email questions to the contacts below. Please note that most library + special collections groups are replying to questions on weekdays only.

A Note About the Updated Library Search

The search box on the library homepage looks the same, but it now connects  to the updated library search (as of 6/24). From there, you can search almost everything in the library’s collection of physical and digital resources. You’ll notice visual differences, but the search will also connect to more resources than ever before. Check out our Updated Library Search Guide to learn about the new features and get advice on using it. If you encounter any issues using the updated library search, please email
