W. J. T. Mitchell is Professor of literature, art history, and cinema at the University of Chicago. His books include Iconology, Picture Theory, What Do Pictures Want?, Image Science, Seeing Through Race and The Last Dinosaur Book. He has served as editor of the interdisciplinary journal Critical Inquiry for forty years. He is currently working on a new book entitled Seeing Madness: Insanity.

For more than 155 years, the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) has been a leader in educating the world’s most influential artists, designers, and scholars.
