Burne Hogarth who is best known for his original work on the Tarzan newspaper comic strip from 1937–50 enrolled at SAIC at the age of 12. Born in Chicago in 1911, Hogarth spent much of his childhood sketching while his father, a carpenter, would design furniture. It was his father, Max, who brought Hogarth along with his sketches to SAIC in 1924 where he was accepted to study. Soon after, at the age of 15, the precocious young man was an assistant cartoonist at the Associated Editors Syndicate, but it wasn’t until after he moved to New York City that his big break came with Tarzan. In addition to his work as a cartoonist and illustrator, Hogarth was also an educator. In 1947 he cofounded the Cartoonists and Illustrators School, which later become the School of the Visual Arts.
