Faculty Resources: H1N1 FACULTY PROTOCOL
Email sent to all Faculty 9.17.09
Sadly this is flu season, so the following protocol must be followed when you encounter students exhibiting flu symptoms:
1. If a student comes to class exhibiting flu symptoms (fever, body aches, cough, runny nose, sore throat, nausea, vomiting), excuse the student from class and direct them to Health Services. Please provide your students with Health Services hours which are from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. The telephone number is 312.499.4288. Outside of business hours, students living in the residence hall should contact their RA, professional staff or security. For students living off campus, they should contact their health care provider or nearest emergency room.
2. Students who miss class because of the flu, or are sent home because of flu symptoms, should receive excused absences. Students are being directed by the institution not to come to class if they have are exhibiting flu symptoms. Additionally, the institution is directing students not to return to class until their temperature has been under 100 degrees for 24 hours. Faculty should work with students on an individual basis, to help them make up missed class work due to illness. There may be multiple students who are affected in a given class and faculty should work with them on an individual basis.
3. The Office of the Deans and Division Chairs will support you as faculty in considering alternatives for students who have missed substantial amounts of class time due to illness. If you are having difficulty identifying whether a student should be allowed to receive credit for a class due to health problems, please contact the Office of the Deans and Division Chairs. The Dean's Office will convene an ad hoc committee of faculty to consult with you in determining student outcomes.
