This 6-week program combines a general introduction to the art, architecture, and history of Central Europe while simultaneously offering students the opportunity to work in the studio facilities at The Academy of Fine Arts in Prague.

We begin in Vienna and after 5 days travel to Prague. The first week and a half provides an introduction to the culture and art of Central Europe by visiting museums, contemporary exhibitions, architectural sites, and lectures. The remaining 4 weeks will focus on intensive studio work, 5 days a week, culminating in a final presentation and exhibition in Prague. Students will work on individual studio projects in consultation with and under the supervision of SAIC teachers and artists from The Academy of Fine Arts in Prague (AVU).

Three fully equipped studios spaces are available: two large painting & drawing studios (available for architecture projects and all media), and one studio emphasizing new media, video, and digital printmaking.

For additional credit in Art History, a research paper is required. The topic will be conceived and developed in Prague, and the paper itself written and evaluated after the conclusion of the program.

The course will focus on the art and architecture of late19th century Prague and Vienna (fin-de-siècle), Early Modernism, and Contemporary. However, all historical periods and topics pertaining to Central European Culture are open for discussion and will be engaged.
