Out of State Cooperative Education Internships

The Cooperative Education Internship Program can help plan an internship outside Chicago

Many students choose to take advantage of out-of-state internships over the summer semester. During a summer semester, students can register for Co-op exclusively, and can earn three or six credits depending on the employer’s and student’s needs.

Leaving Town

An internship experience outside Chicago takes some planning and we cannot guarantee a placement will occur. Depending on where you want to go, and if you have a particular employer in mind, we recommend exploring your options several months prior to the summer.

Do some background research on employers that interest you. You can start with searching the Internet or asking recommendations from your professors or industry professionals in your field. Meet with a Co-op staff member and bring a list of employers from your target city in order of priority.

Please be aware that many out-of-state internships are available for credit only, and students are financially responsible for all expenses incurred, including lodging and transportation. Interested students should attend an orientation session.

Pay careful attention to The School’s academic calendar when making your off-campus Co-op plans.

Requirements

  • All requirements apply for out-of-state Co-op as they do for a Co-op position in Chicago. The primary difference is the long distance relationship that is maintained between the Faculty Advisor, student, and employer.

  • Remember Co-op is a class and tuition is charged. You must be enrolled in a degree program at SAIC.

  • Students must keep in touch with the Faculty Advisor via phone and email throughout the semester. Students are required to attend a final seminar with their Faculty Advisor upon returning to Chicago and present their required documents to earn course credit.
