February 25
The February issue of Art in America (circ. 75,670) notes in the ARTWORLD section on page 134 that the Whitney Biennial had 100 artists in 2006 and 81 in 2008, and "continues its downsizing trend this year with a total of 55 artists or collaboratives." Nevertheless, Painting and Drawing faculty member Jim Lutes (MFA 1982) joins alumni Josh Brand (BFA 2002) and Jessica Jackson Hutchins (MFA 1999) as a selected artist in this year's show.

ALUMNI IN THE NEWS
In Art in America, recent SAIC alumni reviews include Josh Faught (MFA 2006) at Lisa Cooley Gallery and Jan Tichy (MFA 2009) at Richard Gray Gallery, reviewed by faculty member Susan Snodgrass.
Painting and Drawing alumnus George Schmidt (MFA 2004) featured with his wife Jacqueline in the February/March issue of ReadyMade magazine. The article is available on the website of the Schmidts' design firm, Screech Owl Design.
Time Out Chicago art editor Lauren Weinberg reviewed the newest exhibition from photographer and SAIC alumna Helen Maurene Cooper (MFA 2007) in this week's edition (2/4, circ. 52,660), giving the show, Hard Candy, three stars. Praising the exhibition's nuanced concentration on manicures and finger nail art, Weinberg concludes, "Cooper makes us wonder about her subjects' self-denial as well as their self-expression."
SAIC alumna Emily Pilloton (MFA 2007) began her 75-day Design Revolution Roadshow this week on the West Coast. The San Francisco Chronicle (circ. 251,782) covered the kick-off Tuesday (2/2) with a feature article by John Curley . He notes, "Pilloton's journey began when she quit a nice-paying job with one of the leading clothing stores in the country to pursue a dream of designing for the global good...She realized that the years she'd spent studying for her bachelor's in architecture at UC Berkeley and her master's in architecture and product design at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago could be put to better, more socially responsible, use." Pilloton's first stop was also covered in the Contra Costa Times (circ. 174,852) with another feature and more photos.
SAIC alumnus Tobaran Waxman (MFA, 1999-2001) is the winner of the Jewish Museum's first-ever Audience Award, selected from nearly 60 international artists. Votes were gathered from visitors to the exhibition Reinventing Ritual: Contemporary Art and Design for Jewish Life , between September 13 and January 11 at the museum in New York City. Waxman was selected for his provocative installation Opshernish, 2000/2009. The piece examines the construction of gender in Judaism by re-creating and condensing a multi-part performance installation.
