Visiting Artists Program: Current Lectures
Tuesday, February 5, 6:00–7:30 p.m.
The Art Institute of Chicago, Fullerton Auditorium, 111 S. Michigan Ave.
Martha Schwartz is a landscape architect and artist with an interest in urban projects who creates public spaces that build community through intelligent, ideas-based design. As president of Martha Schwartz Partners in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and London, she explores the relationship between landscape, art, and culture and challenges traditional concepts of landscape design. Her goals include designing landscape solutions that enhance the social, environmental, and economic sustainability of a place; raising them to a level of fine art; and making landscape design critical to the sustainability of our surroundings.
Schwartz is the recipient of numerous awards including the Honorary Royal Designer for Industry Award by the Royal Society for the Encouragement of the Arts, Manufactures and Commerce (RSA) for outstanding contribution to design in the UK; the Cooper-Hewitt Museum National Design Award; and several awards from the American Society of Landscape Architects, among others. Presented in collaboration with the William H. Bronson and Grayce Mitchell Lectureship in Architecture, Interior Architecture, and Designed Objects.
