Exceed Boundaries

As an undergraduate student at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, you will be immersed in a community of artists, designers, scholars, and writers who share the belief that meaning and making are inseparable. Through the process of critique, you will be challenged by our award-winning faculty and your peers to be bold, experiment, and expand your vision.

Your studio courses will be rounded out with a full offering of art history, humanities, language, writing, science, and social science in addition to off-campus study and internship opportunities. You will have access to facilities with cutting-edge digital technologies as well as time-honored analog equipment. As a visual scholar, you will learn from the past so that you can help define the future.

Art, Technology, Science, and Design Change the World

There are few moments throughout the course of a day when you will not be influenced by art and design. In addition to viewing great masters and thought-provoking works in museums and galleries, the clothes you wear, the chairs you sit in, the buildings you inhabit, the books you read, and the apps on your cell phone have all been influenced by thinkers and makers like you.

As a visual scholar, you are perfectly prepared to shape the future because you are accustomed to thinking outside of the box and imagining what others may consider impossible.

Cutting-Edge Education

You will find that our approach is purposefully different in order to successfully nurture the growth of innovative visual scholars.

As you consider your future, our unique curriculum provides you with the skills and experiences that open up unlimited opportunities in the world.

Shaping Visual Culture

SAIC students, alumni, and faculty have helped shape the global visual landscape for nearly 150 years.  We have been recognized by Columbia University’s National Arts Journalism survey as “the most influential art college in the United States” and consistently rank among the top graduate fine arts programs in the nation by U.S. News and World Report. In addition, our museum was recently named the #1 museum in the world by TripAdvisor users.

Among our alumni are the famous names: Georgia O’Keeffe, Ivan Albright, Edward Gorey, Claes Oldenburg, David Sedaris, and Cynthia Rowley. But SAIC alums were also responsible for creating Snap, Crackle, & Pop ™, redesigning the View-Master, and working on the holograms which appear on credit cards.
