How are bodies made to perform in economic, social, ritual, and theatrical contexts? This exhibition considers our tendency to both ascribe consciousness to objects and to treat living beings as things. The works are inspired by phenomena as varied and interrelated as the displacement of social relations onto commodities, the incarnation of avatars, and the excessive life force that animates the undead. How might these practices of enchantment and objectification affect our sense of personal power and implicate us in larger political, economic, and ideological interests? Curated by SAIC Adjunct Assistant Professor Ginger Krebs, this exhibition will evolve over the course of seven weeks with new installations, actions and reactions, culminating in an evening of performances on Friday, October 11.
