BS, 2011, Studio Art, Skidmore College, New York. Galen is a Northern California transplant whose cross-disciplinary practice is rooted in broad exploration of process and material. His sculptures and installations often beckon direct interaction, and raise questions about accountability in the way we approach our daily environments. He delights in building all manner of things and may be found reading a product manual cover to cover…and enjoying it.
My practice explores playful—or sometimes sinister—manipulation of my audience. I am fascinated with the power of curated environments to influence human behavior and affect one’s awareness of context and responsibility. When a space or object palpably changes in response to a person’s actions, it initiates a dynamic call and response and establishes a sense of connectivity. By making works that depend on human input, I challenge my audience to collaborate rather than passively consume.
