Experience at SAIC

Marcela Torres's artistic practice reevaluates historical representations of strength, violence, and endurance experienced by disenfranchised communities in USA. Torres creates a lifestyle practice through fitness fueled physical augmentation of her contemporary body that mimics the stress one feels being a non-privileged body. Torres’s performances and projects are physically and emotionally demanding exhibitions of current and historical narratives played out in society and create a future vision of personhood that is beyond current classifications of identity, they look forward to who we really are. Torres asks audience members to view representations of ephemeral moments of subtle hegemony that they view, experience, or inadvertently (or intentionally) cause every day. As a side effect to these events deliberate objects in ceramic, video or photography are created. Torres’s body is her primary medium and is currently involved in training within disciplines of Muay Thai, Western Boxing, Jiu Jitsu, and freestyle dance which continually inform the movements, language, and audience participation of the projects. Torres is training to compete in amateur Muay Thai and MMA fights in the coming year.
