Personal Statement

T.J. Thomas is an industrial designer living and working in Chicago and is founder of Studio Murmur, a design practice conducting both client and self-initiated work in furniture, lighting, consumer products and public design.

Prior to Studio Murmur, T.J. worked in the studios of Eric Pfeiffer and Michael Graves. He has also trained and practiced as a fine furniture maker and co-founded the Furniture Institute of Technology and Sustainability (FITS), a center for design and research developed within the Design and Industry Department at San Francisco State University.

T.J. has served as adjunct assistant professor at the School of Art and Design at the University of Illinois—Chicago and is currently an adjunct faculty member at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in the Department of Architecture, Interior Architecture and Designed Objects.
