About My Co-op Experience
During my Co-op internship I worked at the Field Museum as an Assistant 3D Exhibition Designer. My studies in architecture engineering and later in sculpture resulted in an interdisciplinary body of work, and the Field Museum was a perfect match for my inquiries. I had the opportunity to contribute to several projects which involved researching, brainstorming, designing and preparing drawings for exhibitions and museum equipment elements. The working environment was inspirational and welcoming as all my coworkers were very creative, yet down to earth and approachable. My semester assisting the Field Museum's exhibits department has led to a second internship session which is allowing me to work on much larger projects both in scale and importance.
What I Learned from My Co-op Experience
From week one of my internship, I was exposed to what lies behind the Field Museum's walls; an incredible world of artifacts, scientists, curators, project managers, designers, constructors, artists. It served as an introduction to an entirely new practice for architects and designers which I hadn't considered before, and furthermore, I was able to study its toolsets and methodologies. I attended meetings where I experienced first-hand the designer's responsibility to transform ideas into space, mediate and negotiate multiple interests while still creating innovative work. In addition, the unique fact that the Field Museum houses its own fabrication shops provided the opportunity to witness the two-way process from ideation to implementation and vice-versa.
