SAIC Announces its EXPO Chicago Programming

Chicago—The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC), one of the nation’s leading art and design schools, announced a partnership with EXPO Chicago, the International Exposition of Contemporary and Modern Art, taking place at Navy Pier from September 18–21. In its third year, the four-day art fair will showcase 25 special exhibitions and projects featuring work from 140 galleries around the world. Through a partnership with EXPO, numerous SAIC alumni and faculty will be prominently featured at the event.

SAIC Kicks Off Its 146th Year of Visiting Artists

Chicago, IL—The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC), one of the nation’s leading art and design schools, announced its fall line-up of renowned visiting artists and scholars, a diverse group of makers and thinkers who will lead discussions on contemporary art and culture through public lectures, symposia, performances, and screenings. The visiting artists series, produced by SAIC’s Visiting Artists Program and Conversations at the Edge, respectively, kicks off on September 2 with a lecture by internationally recognized social practice artist and innovator, Theaster Gates.

The School of the Art Institute of Chicago Appoints Jonathan Solomon as Director

Chicago, IL—The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC), one of the nation's leading art and design schools, announced the appointment of Jonathan Solomon to Director of the Department of Architecture, Interior Architecture, and Designed Objects (AIADO). Effective August 1, Solomon will play a critical role in informing curriculum and programming for the department.

SAIC Celebrates 80 Years of Fashion Innovation at Its Annual Fashion Show on Friday, May 2

The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC), one of the nation’s leading art and design schools, proudly announces Fashion 2014, the annual fashion show that celebrates an astounding 80 years of fashion innovation this year. The extraordinary runway show will be presented three times throughout the day on Friday, May 2, at Millennium Park’s Chase Promenade North. Fashion 2014 will culminate with THE WALK 2014—SAIC’s annual benefit gala supporting the production of student work and scholarships.

SAIC Announces 2014 Commencement Speaker and Honorary Doctorate Recipients; About the Honorees; Artist Biographies

Theaster Gates Artist and innovator in the field of social practice, Theaster Gates is internationally known for his work on the South Side of Chicago, including Dorchester Projects, Black Cinema House, and the upcoming Stony Island Arts Bank and Dorchester Artists Housing Collaborative. Founder of the nonprofit Rebuild Foundation, Gates’s work both in museums and in communities responds creatively to the challenges of space.

The School of the Art Institute of Chicago Establishes the Vivian Maier Scholarship Fund

Chicago, IL—The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC), one of the nation's leading art and design schools, announced the establishment of the endowed Vivian Maier Scholarship Fund. The need-based scholarship was made possible by generous donations from Ravine Pictures' John Maloof and Charlie Siskel, and art gallerist Howard Greenberg.

Conversations at the Edge (CATE), the screening and visiting artist series organized by the School of the Art Institute of Chicago's (SAIC) Department of Film, Video, New Media, and Animation (FVNMA) in collaboration with the Video Data Bank and the Gene Siskel Film Center, returns to the big screen on Thursday, March 27, with a multimedia talk by new media scholar and curator Christiane Paul.
