Visiting Minds. Lasting Influence. The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) is pleased to announce the fall 2013 lineup of guest speakers for its Visiting Artists Program (VAP), continuing a tradition endowed more than 60 years ago. VAP hosts two seasons of public presentations by artists and scholars each academic year through lectures, symposia, performances, and screenings.

Dr. Walter E. Massey, President of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC), delivered the Kalamazoo College commencement address on Sunday, June 16, upon receiving an honorary Doctor of Science degree. A prominent advocate of diversity in higher education and accomplished physicist who has served as Director of the Argonne National Laboratory and the National Science Foundation alongside his lengthy career in higher education, Dr. Massey called his address “Get to Work!”

The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) will award new merit scholarships beginning in the fall of 2013 for students entering its internationally renowned Master of Fine Arts (MFA) program. The Ellen Sandor Scholarships, supported by a $50,000 gift from the Richard and Ellen Sandor Family Foundation and an additional promised gift to endow the scholarship fund, will support graduate students in the Department of Art and Technology Studies (ATS) and the Department of Film, Video, New Media, and Animation (FVNMA).

Cutting-edge fashion filled Millennium Park’s Chase Promenade on Friday, May 3 as the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) hosted Fashion 2013, its 79th annual fashion show, and THE WALK 2013 benefit gala. Over 250 garments made by 94 SAIC sophomores, juniors and seniors impressed guests four times throughout the day before Kate and Laura Mulleavy of Rodarte received the Legend of Fashion Award and long-time friend of SAIC Melissa Sage Fadim was honored with the Heart of Fashion Award.

Emerging designers from four graduate design programs at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) will showcase their final projects in SET OFF, a design exploration off the beaten path, presented at the SAIC Sullivan Galleries, 33 South State Street, June 8–July 5. The largest of five new exhibitions on view during NeoCon, North America's largest design exposition, SET OFF is free and open to the public Tuesday–Saturday, 11:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m.

Nine students at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) present Functional Fiction at the 2nd annual NADA NYC, May 10–12, in booth P-14. SAIC’s first display at NADA, the exhibition is the culmination of The Collectible Object, a two-semester course conceived and taught by SAIC professors Dan Price (Sculpture) and Tim Parsons (Designed Objects).

Twelve fashion designers from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) will showcase their collections in an interactive presentation at the Drake Hotel Palm Court on Wednesday, May 15, 2013. Forgoing the traditional runway show in favor of a more dynamic in-the-round presentation, models on elevated platforms will present three to five looks from each designer in a display created around the Palm Court’s fountain. The School of the Art Institute of Chicago celebrates the talented students completing their undergraduate and graduate degrees this spring. MFA candidates from the Film, Video, New Media, Animation (FVNMA) and Sound programs will hold a festival showcasing their projects May 8–10. MFA graduates in SAIC’s Writing program will read their works on May 16. Both events will take place at the Gene Siskel Film Center in downtown Chicago.
